What is Earth observation?

What is SAR imagery?
Synthetic aperture radar: the satellite illuminates the ground with its own radio signal, so it images at night and through cloud. It is the workhorse for maritime surveillance, flood mapping and millimetre-scale ground-movement measurement, where optical sensors go blind. ISR systems
What is satellite remote sensing resolution?
How small an object the sensor can distinguish. Sub-metre resolution reads individual vehicles; ten-metre resolution reads field boundaries and ships. Higher is not always better: a national crop survey needs breadth and revisit more than it needs to count tractors. Agriculture domain
What is hyperspectral imaging from space?
Sensing in hundreds of narrow light bands instead of a few broad ones, so materials identify themselves by spectral fingerprint: crop species, mineral outcrops, oil films, stressed vegetation. It answers 'what is it' where ordinary imagery only answers 'where is it'. Precision agriculture
How often can a satellite revisit the same location?
One satellite in low Earth orbit passes a given site roughly twice a day at varying angles. Revisit is a constellation property: more spacecraft, shorter gaps. Satellite imagery vs drones: which is better for national monitoring?
Different tools. Drones win on a single site for hours at centimetre detail. Satellites win on coverage: every district, every week, no airspace clearance, no crews. National programs use both, with satellites cueing drones to the places worth a closer look. Tactical geospatial intelligence
How is satellite data used in agriculture?
Yield estimation before harvest, soil-moisture and irrigation efficiency mapping, pest-pressure detection and origin traceability, down to sub-acre resolution with weekly revisit. Can satellites detect methane leaks?
Yes. Spectrometers in orbit detect and attribute methane plumes to individual facilities, which turns a diffuse national emissions figure into a list of addresses. Regulators use it for enforcement; operators use it to find leaks that are, literally, money escaping into the air. Methane monitoring
How much does satellite imagery cost for a government?
Bought by the scene, it adds up fast and the queue belongs to someone else. Owned as a constellation, the cost converts to a capital program with marginal tasking near zero. How do countries monitor their borders with satellites?

Can satellite imagery be used as evidence in court or for enforcement?
Increasingly, yes. Time-stamped, orbit-verified imagery documents illegal fishing, encroachment, deforestation and sanctioned-cargo transfers. What satellite sensors detect ground movement in infrastructure?

How can a developing country get its own Earth observation capability?

Why does tasking priority on commercial imagery satellites matter?
Because in a crisis everyone wants the same pictures at the same time, and the provider's home government eats the queue.
