What is a satellite ground station?

What is a satellite ground segment?

What does a mission control centre do?

What is a satellite gateway?
The ground site where a communications satellite's traffic enters and leaves the terrestrial network. Whoever runs the gateway sees traffic patterns even when content is encrypted. What is ground station as a service?
Renting antenna time on a shared global network instead of building your own. Excellent for early missions and overflow capacity, with an obvious caveat: rented downlink is subject to the provider's jurisdiction. Where should a country build its satellite ground stations?
Sites are chosen for pass geometry, radio quiet, connectivity and physical security, usually two or more locations for redundancy. Higher latitudes see polar-orbiting satellites more often, but for a national program the non-negotiable criterion is simpler: inside the borders. Our Offerings
How much does a satellite ground station cost?
A professional smallsat station is a fraction of spacecraft cost, and prices have dropped with commodity software-defined radios. The recurring cost is people and maintenance, not hardware. Can we downlink data from foreign satellites to our own station?
With the right agreements, yes: direct-receiving stations for third-party constellations are an established model, and they shorten the path from pass to product. They are also a sensible first step for countries building ground capability ahead of their own spacecraft. Space Solutions atlas
What happens to satellite data processed in a foreign cloud?
It becomes subject to that cloud's jurisdiction, disclosure laws and outage schedule. Processing national imagery abroad re-imports the dependence the satellite was bought to remove. How many ground stations does a satellite constellation need?
It depends on latency: one station means data waits until the next pass over your territory; more stations, or inter-satellite links, shrink that gap. We size the ground network from the freshness requirement backwards, because antennas are cheaper than regret. Our Offerings
Why does it matter where satellite data is downlinked?
Because the downlink site's government can lawfully intercept, delay or deny what passes through it. How do you secure a satellite ground station against cyber attack?
The ground segment is the most attacked part of any space system, and documented incidents in our catalogue prove it. What skills do ground station operators need?

Can a ground segment be delivered before the satellite launches?

What is the difference between a gateway and a teleport?
A teleport is a commercial multi-antenna facility serving many operators; a gateway is the specific ground entry point of one network.
